Urist McMuslim
« on: February 24, 2013, 10:55:44 pm »

I've just lost two adventurers in this new world, an Elf who retired after a third night creature in the lair she wandered into gibbed her companions and a Dwarf who fled the two necromancers and their horde as his three men were butchered-- then died after going to sleep on a bridge in a Hamlet and getting boogy'd.

So of course I'm elated to hear that my first Service to render is slaying a vampire! I walk up to the first able bodied soldiertype, boogymen far too recent on my mind to risk any amount of travel without a compatriot, and am greeted thusly:

I'm taking this as a sign my adventure is about to go all Sinbad; it'll be interesting to see which way he prays, at any rate.

Ala is undeniably a randomly generated name for a deity. Talk to him some more and find out what this deity's spheres are (they usually mention their deity during greetings and goodbyes)

It's definitely light, which he bangs on about at any given opportunity; when I was using him to triangulate a vampire though, he closed with "When you arrive at your destination, show devotion and experience Ala." He also says stuff about strength quite frequently but I don't know if that's just Thefin being himself or indicative of his religion.

Of course, this is randomly generated, but that just makes it all the funnier that the randomly generated name is so close to a real world religion-- and that a commonly heard phrase (Praise be to Ala) would be the first thing I heard the dude say.

EDIT: "It cannot be said enough; give yourself to Ala" is his latest Thefinism. I'm really going to miss him when I/he die(s).

I have a feeling that this thread is going to cause some serious arguments.

*goes to get the popcorn*

This has the potential to be the most heated flamethread that I have seen. All over a not very funny coincidence.

I ran through the raws, his name means "bowel-honour" :-\, and Ala means "Match-Equal".
Funny coincidence all the same though.

Good Thefin lies regrettably slain upon the fields of the Continent of Funerals. Bandits jumped us on our way back from slaying a particularly pathetic night creature.

To clarify: I hope to dissuade any cruel jabs at, or attempts at advanced socio-cultural discussion of which will invariably disintegrate into the former about, Islam here. T'was merely a coincidence.

The Al(e)a interpretation is interesting; we need a Dwarven linguist.

I don't think such a thing exists. Dwarven/Toadese is a partial cipher for English, not a language. But that's another topic. ::)

And wasn't that the human language?

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!
