Obsidian walls clogging up my rooms ?

Hey guys been playing dwarf fortress for about 2 years now although exclusively in Adventure mode out of fear of the colossal beast that is fortress mode. just started out my first fortress and have been chugging along nicely so far but I've encountered a problem, when mining out my rooms the miners ignore Obsidian walls which means i cannot build any workshops. if anyone could give me tips on how to remove these please it would be much appreciated :) and i hope i can start contributing more to the forums in the near future as some of these topics have brought me hours of entertainment  :P

*figured it out now :/ sorry turns out my Dwarves where being lazy and leaving the obsidian till last i feel pretty dumb now  :-[ *

Don't feel dumb. This games learning curve may be the steepest in all of gaming! Just keep chugging on and have fun.
