Soundfonts, dosbox and darklands
« on: February 18, 2013, 12:04:47 pm »

Okay so I've recently accidentally readdicted myself to darklands, which is totally fine. But one thing that's currently bugging the hell out of me is finding a way to get the sound effects just right.

For anyone that doesn't know, darklands uses midi instructions for sound effects. As intended this made arrows make a little thwipping noise, guns make a pop and swords made a metallic clang noise as you'd expect. The problem is... The windows 7 midi emulation is bad enough I need to use soundfonts for midi in older games to be listenable.

The other problem is this seems to fuck with the sound effects to no end. Weapons sound like insturment twangs, stringed insturment hits or even in one case metal drums which makes combat sound like poorly designed sting music or an island holiday. Arrows tend to be silent or make an ear peircing zwee noise. Guns sound like someone hitting a tinny gong with a hammer.

Just... Is there something I can use that would emulate a 1992 era sound blaster well enough to get the old sounds back? Or at least something similar to them? I'm really enjoying playing again but this keeps pulling me right out of the game.

Edit: Turns out it was a bug caused by file swapping that a patch or something did. It's fixed now. Derp
