How good is War of the Roses?
« on: February 05, 2013, 03:45:34 am »

OK, so I recently got the game on Steam as a gift. From a bit of googling around, it kinda looks like something I might enjoy.

There's a problem, though - it doesn't work on XP. And frankly, I'm not too keen to switch to Windows 7. Windows 8 is not an option, I wouldn't touch that hideous thing with a 10 foot pole. Anyway, XP feels very comfortable, and I think I'm getting better performance with it because my rig is far from top notch and as I understand 7 is a bit of a RAM hog.

On the other hand, hey - a free game! So yeah, I'd like to hear some B12 opinions on the game itself, to see if it's worth switching my OS.

My opinion of it has dropped a bit since launch, mostly due to their code architecture meaning the last two updates I got meant redownloading the entire game. I don't think it helps that I consider the way Chivalry handles attacking to just be a straight up improvement.

Still, if you enjoyed Mount and Blade, you'll enjoy this, just keep in mind the game can be pretty grindy, and it's not unlikely that the new weapon you spend your money on will turn out to be useless. There's basically a lot of choice traps in the game, but in return, there's a lot to customise.

And yes, Windows 7 can be a bit of a RAM hog, but if you can get your hands on some extra RAM, it's a pretty good OS, once you turn off UAC. Probably worth mentioning that XP is starting to get phased out too, so keep that in mind if you're considering an upgrade.

Without wanting to spark a debate there isn't much reason to not update to Windows 7, unless your completely is a real junker.

The game itself is basically Mount and Blade with the singleplayer ripped out. I personally found the combat a little too slow and "floaty" compared to Mount and Blade to be enjoyable. I wasn't a fan of the execution, resurrection and squad spawning mechanics either. I found they made it impossible for a skilled player to take down a group.
There are some great engine feats in there. It seems to handle lag pretty well and the way the game determines damage based on what part of the weapon (e.g. hilt or blade) hit is pretty impressive. It just didn't seem to flow right for me.

Chivalry which is the competing melee "sword and board" game has completely blown War of the Roses out of the water in both sales and server population.

The game has a long way to go still, but its focus on realism is something to certainly take a look into.
