Need help with freakin modems.
« on: February 06, 2013, 02:56:52 pm »

Long story short, I'm finally upgrading from dial up to wifi, and the guys now providing the internet service said I would need at least a docksis 3.0. Since it's already been an expensive past couple of days, I'd rather not have to buy another modem if I didn't need to. Since my google-fu is extremely weak in this area, I was wondering if I would be able to use a Cisco Linksys wireless-G broadband router with speed booster model WRT54GS and 2.4 Ghz with 802.11g that I got from my grandpa before he died a few years back and if that will do the trick.

If you already have a modem and a router, all you really need is a wireless access point.

If you already have a modem and a router, all you really need is a wireless access point.
you mean adapter, a wireless router is a AP

these are the steps to follow in order to make your router with the modem.
1. make sure the router is not plugged into the modem. hard reset the router (30-30-30 you can find information online)
2. once the router goes through its steps plug it back into the modem
3. now do a quick reset of the modem (or power cycle it)
this process can take anywhere from 5-6 minutes for it to link up.
ALSO if you can access the router's admin panel, check to make sure the DHCP server is on that way it will autoconfigure with the modem.

Currently won't have internet for 5 more days since I just got done moving a few months back and things have been slow. The reason I'm trying to get wifi set up is because my mom just recently got a laptop she wants to be able to use anywhere in the house. And I guess my above post I gave info about the router instead of the modem... Anyways the modems a motorola surfboard with docksys 2.0, so if I use that, will it just have a problem like not being as fast as the 3.0 the guy said was minimum, or I guess just not work because it's not the minimum

DOCSIS is a industry standard for modem connections, each version has different features and encryption. I know for 3 ipv6 became a standard and allows multichannel connections.

So is that a "no it will not work"? Like I said, the only experience I've had with internet connection was just connecting my computer to a phone jack and calling it a day.

Alright, just want to thank you all for your help. And just got done talking with her and she told me she thinks they said they will provide the docsis 3.0 modem, and we just need to worry about the router instead. So as long as a router from 2004 is compatible with it, we should be good to go.

yea pretty much as long as its set to autoDHCP and takes in ethernet you should be fine after that
(also just for your information, sometimes ISPs like to stamp on a equipment rental charge for using their stuff, comcast is rampant on that)

Wait are you saying that they don't operate DOCSIS 3.0 or they won't provide you a correct modem?
