Forbidding an area
« on: January 31, 2013, 03:18:58 am »

Ok, I can't seem to figure this out.   There is an area on my map that is a bit hazardous due to its geological configuration (ie, the top of a tall cliff).  Every now and again some stupid Dwarf will go up there for whatever reason (I don't put any designations up there that would cause anyone to go up) and some that go up fall off and are usually killed on landing.  Is there a way to make it so that Dwarfs won't try to go up there, like a designation to forbid an area?

Put a big wall around the area

Sovjet/Chinese tactics work in this case

You can also try to restrict the area, d->o->r   this way they will prefer routs that are away from the edge.

These are all good suggestions.  Which one is best depends on what the problem actually is.  It might be worth your while to figure out why your dwarves are walking up there, since you don't think they should be. You can use v on a dwarf that is headed in that direction and see what particular activity he has on his mind at the moment.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

Indeed, check for job cancellations as well, I think there should be job cancellations while falling since they won't go up there for no reason.

This is definitely the most sure fire method, if it's possible to wall it off.  If you just put traffic restrictions on the path they will still walk through it if it's the only way to get where they're going.

I'll second the suggestion of trying to figure out why they're headed there though.  You may have a more subtle issue.

it reminded me of the old waterfall issue, where the solution was "wall it off, make a shorter way since they'll go there anyway, or use dfhack to keep them from walking into the river (remove the ramps near the edge)"

I think my most specil moment with this was when the waterfall issue was pretty much unknown and I only found out because I was watching some hippos that I noticed that the waterfall had claimed several goblin ambushes and a were creature

It then went on to claim dwarfs, mostly masons who were supposed to a) build a bridge, b) build floors as a bridge and in the end, c) put a wall around the whole area, which claimed a final victim as one mason got stuck on the wrong side and starved (more than enough water, after all)

Check around the area for dropped items, too... it's possible there's a sock laying around up there that they keep trying to grab. My favorite solution is a nice sturdy wall... it's a bit easier to set up and more fail-proof compared to burrows and traffic restrictions.
