Animals and infection

Is it possible to hunt animals to extinction? I've been hunting some elephants, and i've also caught some but they have stopped coming. Also, my dwarves
were killing some goblins, and two of them got hurt. Their wounds got infected, and they've been this way (the wounds) for some time, and i had and i still
have soap in my hospital and stockpiles.

Animals can go extinct as far as I know.

Why the wounds haven't been cleaned I'm not sure...

Animal populations behave strangely in fort mode.  You're only going to have a handful of animals on your map at once, perhaps only 2-3, although this depends on the creature.  I believe this is per biome, so if you embarked on multiple biome tiles you might get several sets of animals.  You can easily kill off that number, and may not see any more of that species for quite some time.  I think it is possible to hunt the population to extinction, but you're probably just getting unlucky and the game decides to not have any more of that species wander onto your map.

The infections are a complicated matter.  Once infection sets in, soap and wound cleaning have no effect I believe.  The dwarf in question will simply have to fight off the infection, or eventually succumb to it.  This can take years, depending on the dwarf's healing rate and disease resistance, and some dwarves will never recover from infection, nor die from it.  At least not for many, many years, at which point they're far more likely to die of something else.

penicillin and other antibiotics havn't been invented yet, so once an infection sets in, it's up to armok, who is known for having a twisted sense of humor (it was an infected thumb, come on!)

1)It is possible to hunt animals to extinction at your fortress, but much more likely is that you simply have gotten unlucky and not had any of that particular species wander onto your map. (Keep in mind the more desolate area you are living in, the more likely that you really have hunted that particular species to extinction.

2)Once a wound is infected it will almost never heal, with infections only healing extremely rarely. However the way the game handles infection is that it basically acts like an internal bleeding of the wound. If the infected dwarf has enough recuperation to restore all of the blood lost to the internal bleeding of the infection, then they could potentially live for the rest of their full life. Infections stack though, so having a large number of infections or having larger body parts infected will increase the chance of their death. An easy and telltale sign of which dwarves are not going to survive is if they become "Pale" in their wound screens. Once a dwarf has become pale it means that they are losing blood faster then they can replenish it, and unless they get extremely lucky will eventually succumb to their infection(s).

Death is usually pretty quick once an infected dwarf gets to Pale. I would guess it's because there's a narrow window between Pale and death.

It may be helpful to manually wash a heavily infected dwarf. One military dwarf I had recovered from numerous infections after I designated a pond zone above his bed, but one child in the same situation didn't make it. It can't really hurt, unless your hospital architecture allows poured water to wash dwarves into the well.

Infections can remain even after a body part shows no extant wounds in the health screen or description page (injuries are more permanent in the Wounds screen, but this applies for fully-healed ones and infected ones alike). These infections do cause bleeding and trigger Clean Self jobs, though I don't know how fatal they are.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
