Worlds of fliers
« on: January 31, 2013, 06:35:25 am »

Why is the wildlife in the worlds I'm genning seems to comprised solely of fliers? Most importantly flying people.
Waves after waves of ravens people, sparrow people, mosquitoes people, thrips people, crow people, bushtit people, peach-faced lovebird people, masked lovebird people.
Interspersed with the giant versions ie giant thrips, giant mosquitoes, giant sparrows.
Where did all my giant tigers, elephants and bears go?

This is one of the problems with DF2012. It added a lot of new animals, but most especially for each animal a people variant and giant variant.

Which is not bad in theory, but in practice... yeah. OH HEY I AM A THRIPS MAN. I DON'T DO ANYTHING BUT FLY AROUND AND BE USELESS.

Variety of animals is good, but the problem is that this huge influx of new creatures in DF2012 has actually decreased variety. I haven't seen a single giant desert scorpion since DF2010 (ok, maybe once or twice). Camels, which were the most notable animal you saw in deserts, are now rare. Giant eagles are no longer as good as they were in DF2010.

Note there are quite a bit of useful or interesting creatures in DF2012, just the majority who are... uninteresting and of no other use to you to train marksdwarves and get meat. /rant

But this is Toady's game, and he does whatever he wants with it. Just edit your raws until you're happy with your animals.

If there a quick and dirty edit that can be made to the raws to change the probability of different types of animals appearing?

I'd try putting [CV_NEW_TAG:POPULATION_NUMBER:0:0]  after each [CV_REMOVE_TAG:POPULATION_NUMBER] in c_variation_default.txt
don't know whether this won't cause duplication errors.
Guess you'd have to find and adjust POPULATION_NUMBER for each offending animal manually in their raws.

I've fixed the "more giant mosquito men?" problem with genocide. Marksdwarves a few levels up with bone bolts won't kill off much of the ground level wildlife but will get rid of flying populations in a few years. (I play small embarks, YMMV)

It might help to put [FREQUENCY:1] to animalpeople. They might still show up as target practice, but not as often as you seem to be plagued with.

Not true they make great starter training dummies.

Savage biomes will do that too, a regular biome won't have the giant animals and animal people.

Might want to take a look at the LFR mod on the mod forums, it comes with an optional folder offering a user short and simple instructions on where to paste a single file held in that optional folder to remove giant and humanoid versions of creatures.  http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=84186.0
