key to world map?
« on: January 28, 2013, 11:55:45 pm »

Is there any key to what the symbols on the world map mean?  I couldn't find one on the wiki.  I've picked up that the omega is a dwarf fortress and the paragraph sign is an elf city, but as far as goblins, humans, etc, I don't know how to identify them.  The site selection dialog only shows you the settlement name, not what it is.

Here is a list of all of the various fortress/town symbols. You can also find the specialized symbols for some other things (such as volcanoes) by clicking on their specific articles in the list at the bottom of that wiki entry.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

So, which ones are the goblins? "Dark fortress"?

That's right. Goblins used to have obsidian towers. We'll be able to visit them again next version.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Yes, unless it was conquered by another race during world generation. Elves by default come in forest retreats. Note that until the next version comes out only human towns actually exist in-game right now, and if you travel to mountain halls, dark fortresses, or elven retreats in adventure mode or by using an embark now utility you will just find an empty area.

Edit: Ninja!
