cave-ins: what am I missing
« on: January 28, 2013, 12:58:49 pm »

After a breach of the magma see I was left with unfiltered magma coming into my prospective magma channel (not shown are a grate and screw pump further to the south).  I would like to fill it and was under the impression that this configuration:

would cause a cave in and seal the breach, but obviously it isn't... so what am I missing here?

It's a little difficult to tell since I don't use tilesets, but is there a floor above that "hanging" piece of wall? In order for a piece of wall to cave-in it has to be unsupported in all orthogonal directions, including both up and down. Also keep in mind that only natural walls will leave a wall behind after they fall, constructed ones will just break apart.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

There isn't anything to the sides or top, though the tile below is a magma immersed upward ramp, which must be what is holding the pillar up... however since it is a constructed wall it isn't going to matter anyway.  Next strategy, zone it as a pond and hopefully turn it to obsidian.

The ramp is probably holding it up. Try to remove it.
I think this is the problem which is totally legit.

Make sure that you zone your pond at least 2 levels above the magma (so that there is a level of empty space between the pond level and the magma level. If you don't then all you will get is steam instead of the magma obsidianizing.

If I'm reading your pictures correctly, this is what you've got:

Code: [Select]
Z+0   Z+1   Z+2

77#77 ##### #####
###77 #...# #   #
 #7## ..W.# # . #
 #### ....# #   #
 #r#  .._## #####

Nothing is ever going to happen in that setup, since the "W" wall you're trying to drop (from Z+1) is already anchored by 4 adjacent floors.

You would need to have the wall suspended at Z+2 (and your current Z+2 replicated at Z+3) before it would fall down.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
