Goblin siege
« on: January 27, 2013, 11:20:41 pm »

So I have been going with this fort for years (in game), and have had many ambushes and no sieges. So I looked it up, and I need a pop of 80. Problem is my pop cap is at 40, and I maxed at 45.
So my question is this. Is there anyway for me to provoke a goblin siege with this current fort?

As a side note and related question. I know I can provoke the trade races. If I do go to war with the elves though, do they remember trap placement?

I'm prety sure you can raise your pop cap without restarting the fort.  Asumeing lazy newb or some other game launcher that allows you access to these settings just set the new pop cap to 80 and wait.  After the next visit from the dwarven ambasador and trade caravan you should start recieving migrants agian the following year.

IIRC invaders only remember traps that have been seen by their diplomats, therefore unless you have used the "tweak fixdiplomats" command in DFHack or have modded your game so that elves have diplomats, elves won't be immune to your traps.

Cool. Thats what I thought.
Now another related question.
I decided to outright slay an entire elven caravan. They still wanted to trade the next year, which I then preceeded to try to sell 20 wooden barrels. How hard is it to piss them off enough to go to war?

In my experience slaughtering a single caravan plus 2-3 diplomats isn't a guaranteed declaration of war.  I don't know what the threshold is, but it's either very random or requires quite a lot of blatant provoking.

I'm not sure if trying to sell wood to elven caravans is enough to actually count toward this, or if it just makes the caravan leave and count the entire year as if they traded nothing.  That would only make them bring less next year, supposedly.

I have been stealing cloth (due to a bug I didn't notice) from caravans for years and never had a war or siege.

Yeah that stupid cloth bug deeling with hospitals...... UGH. Can't wait till update!
Guess I'll just slaughter elves until they attack me. Downside is the cleanup, on the plus side though, I'll never have a shortage of cloth/wood.

Just keep in mind that you will get an Uninvited Guest when you hit 80 pop. Beware its procedurally generated attributes!

It's either hit 80 or get a fort wealth of a million, and yeah, you'll be eligible for spoilers from below and above at 80 or a million wealth.

I know about the FB's, MB's and all that. I just recieved a ton of ambushers at the same time. It felt like a siege, minus the trolls (darn you who live below the Mackinaw :P) and mounts. But alas, twas far to simple to smite them all. I'm nervous about doubling my pop cap right now in this fort though because it would affect my fps greatly, then again... Maybe it is time to abandon this fort, it's been going for 2 decades at least. Plus I could look forward to all/most/some of my legendary Dwarves coming to my new fort.

Edit: I have 5.7 Million wealth. Only had 1 FB so far, no MB's, countless were creatures, and no sieges. I'm interested in the legends for this one, wanna see whats been going on outside of my control area.

I've read something on the forums here (not sure where, sorry) that indicated the amount of tolerance the elves have also relates to how happy they were with you to begin with. I'm guessing if you spent two decades in-game giving them nice fat profits it'll be significantly harder to entice them into war, though of course still possible.

In my first successful fort I tried to sell them (accidentally) some wood at the first time they sent a caravan. I never got a caravan again but only ambushes/sieges. Maybe their tolerance starts very low?

I'm glad someone got that! Not a native born Yooper, but damn I love it up here. But can't relate yoopers to elves, many an industrious miner up here.

Any way. Yeah the wiki says you build up relations as you trade with them. So now I got myself into a long period of killing off their caravans. I don't know how many more I need to do, and I can only hope the fps stays at a steady 75-80, for me to go to war with them. I do know I could start anew, but damnit this fort has to die. One way or another! Hmmm. time to set up a human war too!
