Hospital restocking with caravan goods?
« on: January 27, 2013, 02:16:40 pm »

I made a hospital which was in need of cloth. At the same time a caravan arrived. Now all my dwarves are looting and plundering the caravan of all cloth.

Will this give me a bad disposition with humans, should they consider it stealing?

AFAIK, hospitals are badly bugged in the current version, with the dwarfs ignoring all limitations and putting any cloth, thread etc they can find anywhere in your fortress in the hospital.

I think current best practice is to not put any containers in the hospital and just have some small stockpiles of the needed goods. They don't show up in the hospital info screen buy I think the doctor will go get them from the stockpile as needed. More experienced players please correct me as I have difficulty to get a hospital running properly (so maybe I shouldn't be answering questions here ;-))

Would they see me as criminal and siege/ambush me if I keep doing it?

I think they consider the amount of profit/loss, so, stealing some thread probably isn't nearly as bad as ripping off the whole caravan, and may even be covered by their profit margin if you traded a lot.   I always let the hospital "steal" and it's never enough of a problem to push them to war.   If you want to avoid "cheating" you could always gift them a set of silver goblets in return :)

Maybe, try turn down the Hospital stocks threshhold until you have domestic cloths up and running.

I generaly just disable the hospitals stock settings(or avoid containers) and just put a set of mini stockpiles of the needed goods nearby for the doctors to use.

As far as robing the caravan as long as you do a fair bit of tradeing it probably wont start a war.  The only one you may not want to steal from in this maner would be the elves.   The cloth they bring is about the only thing of significant value you'd want to trade with them.  all stolen cloth means only a few 100 dwarf bucks worth of wood traded which means a huge trade deficit and probably a few ambushes/sieges after a few seasons.   The other caravans you can probably make up for it by buying up their metal goods.

Then agian maybe you should steal from the elves.  After all what good is a fortress without a war or two to defend it from?

I've noticed this behavior in every fort recently. I've never had a war because of it.

If you want to have a hospital with containers, the work-around is to add containers one at a time and wait until they are full before adding the next.  If you do that they work correctly.  My current fort has a hospital with containers and no one is stealing cloth or thread.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

Im encountering this as well. When you first set up the hospital, set the amount of clothes in the zone settings really low so you can inhibit the dwarves natural need to act stupid.

If it displeases you greatly you could always... abandon.

If you want you can download a version of the 34.11 exe with the binary patch fix for this and several other problems here (windows only, sadly).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Touché.

Thanks, it's resolved now. I just need to time it better.

Thanks everyone for all the help!
