Any way to prioritize job over hauling labor?
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:24:04 am »

In my fortress everyone prefers hauling over doing their jobs. I can disable them all, yet then I would have no haulers and waiting for new migrants is not feasible. I need to fix this. since my production is based upon demand and not mass production, I want dwarves that have nothing to do to haul items, yet when I give an order I want them to stop hauling. My dorfs do not seem to understand this!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!  8)

Disable hauling on the dwarves you want doing important jobs?

The *large serrated steel disk* strikes the Raven in the head, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull, and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

1. Switch off hauling (aka. 'gathering') for certain items in the [o ]rders screen.

2. Keep cancelling the current hauling job on the dwarf you want to go and do something else. Eventually they'll get the hint. This doesn't work if the dwarf is storing an item in a bin or vehicle, because you can't remove creatures from those jobs.

3. Have more dwarves able to do the job you want doing.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Thanks for the help, I'm doing a 12-dwarf challenge but it's not working out that well.

Much appreciated! :D

I have done a 2 dwarf challege, it was very interesting and I have never learned more about how the system worked than I did with that fort.

You cannot do what you asked, but what you can do is divide your dwarves into 3 or 4 groups and assign each group a different subset of the hauling labours.  Then assign your specialization skills but be sure to duplicate them accross groups.  If you do this then not all dwarves will be hauling at the same time and there will usually be someone to do the job.

Some hauling jobs are used more often than others, like food and item hauling.

Good luck!  Small pop forts are my favorite by far.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.
