Clowns had a civilization down there in circus in times before time before time. Flourishing one. Their technical advancements has allowed them to change their shape.
Then they've exhausted the resources of circus and barely managed to pierce the semi-molten rock creating curious structures to evacuate to the upper world.
But the rulers devised the plot to block the excess population down there. That's when candy masterworks are created.
Upon the execution of the plan their  civilization is shattered by the conflict.
Those who disagreed with the sealing of their brethren either were destroyed or turned into a creatures whose existence is the most unpleasurable like abominations from the third cavern. Some have fled into the depth and were forgotten, some escaped to the surface.
The remains of those who have 'won' the conflict tried to adapt to the new world giving the beginning to all the sentient races, the degree of their cultures resembling their ancestors varying from one to another.
And those sealed in circus unable to create another breach have traded their sentience in exchange for the capability to wait for someone to release them from above and the power to bring vengeance upon all life above.

As of now, the rough hewn slade wall section beneath the adamantine weapon trapdoor doesn't feel like a geological formation that was already there... it looks more like a column of slade sprung on purpose from the infernal slopes, mostly emptied and carved upon to create twisting passages and chambers. If the semi-artificial feel is a design choice, and not a momentary consequence of the procedural generation, it seems to indicate that whoever/whatever (be it supernatural or not) commissioned the construction of the smooth slade fortress had a role in the rise of the slade 'pillars' as well.

The masterwork adamantine weapon could be meant as a failsafe by whoever trapped the demons to have future heroes be properly equipped to face hell,.. or as a lure preying on one's greed to unleash the demons, as a punishment or even a reward, depending on the heroes' personality. Who knows?
