I travel a lot for work. Last year I spent a week in SF and really disliked the city. I think it mostly had to do with my hotel location. I forget what city it was in, but there were no restaurants within walking distance.

Anyways, it looks like I am going back, but this time I will be closer to Alameda I believe.

Anyone know the area? Can someone help me find a hotel that fits the following criteria:

1. Food and drinks within walking distance. When I go places I don't know I like to keep the hotel within visual confirmation range/stumbling distance. It doesn't have to be anything special, just a place to get a drink and some food and meet random people.

2. Safe. Stopping by WalMart in Oakland freaked me out. I am not too cowardly of a traveler, but I don't like staying in neighborhoods where there are bars all the way up to the third story.

3. Within a half an hour of Alameda at morning rush hour.

If anyone has suggestions let me know. I am also open to ideas of what to do in the city, but I doubt I'll have any time to see the sites.

I'm from Alameda and well, unless you have to be, I would avoid Oakland altogether.

Alameda's a big place, so you'll have to be specific of where you want to be.
It also depends on your budget.

There are definitely hotels near restaurants in SF.

I will most likely be in the area of Coast Guard Island. As for budget, most hotels honor per diem. I would think anything middle of the road would.
