I used to use kittens as vermin hunter and "friends" for my population to give them happy thoughts...
Then, 3 cats at once died because some idiot has decided to start pumping water NOW, not 3 MONTHS BEFORE. Dat berserk tauntrum... My militia commander was so unhappy about his cat that he has chopped his son's head right off. And then proceeded to decapitate everyone who was to stupid/sane to stay in the fort and don't run awat to some deep pit.

The first small thing that made me feel awesome was my indoor waterfall. A few minutes later though, it started flooding my fort so I felt less awesome.

You men disgust me.

Obviously these kittens are meant as a spare food supply, that way the Dwarves won't starve during a siege!

In masterwork kitten skulls are best when carved into totems and then used in dark arts!

Hi guys. I made a pit around my entrance and poor kittens keep falling from the bridge. Is there a way to save them without having to dig a tunnel from my main ladder hallway? Because doing so would force me to build walls to seal it and if a building destroyer gets into the pit it will find its way to the core of my fortress.

Thanks!

You haven't played much DF, right ? Cause I can guarantee you will stop to care about the cute animals after a while.

Hence why you keep your cat population to a minimum.

I love cats IRL, but in this game they're just a bother. Keep one for hunting vermin, or keep only one gender of cats.

By "one gender", you mean only male cats.  Because one unnoticed male cat showing up with a migrant wave can fertilize every female cat you have.

As callous and cruel loving and caring as I am (as I'm sure we all are), I still feel a bit bad when I'm purging caging my fort's baby animals. Puppies and kittens especially, other livestock not so much.

Dunno why. I should be pretty insensitive, since that thought of "doesn't really care about anything anymore" is stuck in the screen.

You heartless bunch of Bay12-ers. Am I the only one who treats his animals nicely?

Besides, look at my avatar. Not even the most callous would be inclined to turn that into a !!kitten!!.

It's empathy. They are merely representations of cats, just c's around the screen. When they die, their tile change to another colored c.

This representation tends to turn them into mere inanimate objects instead of living beings (or representations thereof) you can relate to. Unless you consider objects worthy of empathy, but that's your problem.

and then less empathy felt toward something => more ready or less bothered to inflict harm on it. It's that simple.

If they meow'd and did cute things and purred and were... more easily relatable, I'm sure cat killing on these boards would be lower.

I sometimes relate to some of my dwarves or pets though, but that's always because they are notable or useful or one of the original seven.

Cats in DF are too much like the vermin they hunt. And leave around all over my Fort.

I will not treat animals better than I treat my Dwarves.

Why would you ever purge baby animals when it is so much more worthwhile to wait until they are grown up and butcher them then?

Personally I just let the cats roam wild, but since I use them as my spotters (I pasture several of them at every entrance to spot invaders and chain a few here and there randomly around the map) I never really have too big of a problem with catsplosions since they tend to die off almost as fast as they breed.

I realized long ago that not only kittens but important things, like Master Weapon Crafters, can fall in ditches.  as such, I build min in such a way that there is always an exit to the outside of my fort.  Granted, if someone falls in during a siege it doesn't help much, but for all other times it works fine.
