I hate this fucking dwarf with a passion
« on: January 12, 2013, 02:12:25 am »

Seriously...

"He tends to avoid crowds. He likes working outdoors and grumbles only mildly at inclement weather."

He literally will not go downstairs to the fortress, despite the fact that he's starving, and all the food is down there. I've even tried making a burrow and he won't respect it.

Oh, and did I mention this place has reanimation and skeletal invaders?

Seriously. How the fuck do I make this guy do what I need him to do? God. I am just so pissed D<

There was a similar thread a few days ago:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=121399.0

Have you ever placed a meeting zone of your trade depot?
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Trade_depot#Bugs

Maybe he cannot go underground? Burrow restrictions? Civilian alerts active? Unable to path due to raised bridges or locked doors?

Just started the game, so in order....

Never built a trade depot, everyone is underground but him, he doesn't care about burrows and pretends they aren't there, no civ alerts, no bridges/doors built

If he's starving but not going downstairs to get a bite, you've done something that prevents him from doing so - removed stairs, disconnected stairs, unusable ramps, locked doors, whatever. You can test that by ordering a construction built near the stuck dwarf - if paths are broken, you won't be offered any materials from inside.

Unless there's something else interfering (conflicting burrows? military orders? insanity?), creating a new staircase between the inside of your fort and the surface ought to get the dwarf inside.

There's the rub, though. Initially I had a 1-tile wide passage. But only the miner would enter or leave. I had a second path in, and now all six dwarves used the newly widened road--except the offending jerkass. I know that it's none of the above because I've never removed stairs, never built bridges or doors, the path is totally open.

Of course, the friggin game crashed before I'd saved, so I get to start over again. (Friggin undead wiped us out the first time.) So this is officially a moot point, but I'd bet ten Uristbucks it'll happen again, to the same dwarf, since the save I do have is at the very absolute beginning before unpausing, so the dwarves have set personality traits, and I recall the "avoids crowds" being buggy. As in, the dwarf becomes uber antisocial and claustrophobic.

Though seriously if the dwarf is too claustrophobic to stay indoors underground I see this as matter of natural selection that will solve itself relatively quickly.

Yeah, but he's a dedicated military dwarf. And I doubt I'll be getting more than two migrant waves, as the dwarves are said to be "one of the only members of their kind", as opposed to the first.

Oh well. At least I have my underwater volcano.

You'll get migrants.  When I started my latest fort, after stopping worldgen in year 2, my starting dwarves were "one of the only ones of his/her kind", a line that changed to "first" as soon as there was a natural dwarven birth.

My fortress is now almost at 250 dwarves, and continues to attract migrants

I remember I had a weird bug where two dwarves were sparring and then they stopped moving and could not be moved from the spot no matter what I did. They both starved to death.

Oh, they obviously punched eachother into next week, thus displacing them in time.

"He tends to avoid crowds. He likes working outdoors and grumbles only mildly at inclement weather."

Not relevant.

he's a dedicated military dwarf.

Did you ever give his squad a station or kill order? That's the most likely cause of this. Give him another station order in the dining room or something to keep him from wandering out there. If that's still not it, upload the save to DFFD.

Oh well. At least I have my underwater volcano.

That's pretty sweet.

Edit:
Derp, problem solved by zombies. In the future though, always give military dorfs a new station order inside after the other is finished.

I had that. I was able to separate them by using DFHack to create some water to slosh them around. I don't remember if the mining I did underneath them worked, but even if it did it bugged me to have that little patch of excavation.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
