loading magma into minecarts problem
« on: January 09, 2013, 12:12:18 pm »

I'm am currently trying to build my first minecart magma transport system, but have never gotten the magma loading system to work properly. Currently I run the minecart through a few channels filled with magma, but it works intermittently, and sometimes the cart doesn't come out of the channel. Can somebody suggest a more efficient method that works 100% of the time? Preferably this would not involve dropping magma on the minecart.

Are you using rollers, or glitch ramps? I seem to recall there being an issue with loading liquid on a square with a glitch ramp, but rollers should make it so it loads, and leaves the trench, even if it's annoying to set up, and less fast

I am using the ramp exploit so I don't have to build a water reactor to generate power and so I can save some fps. Fps is also the reason I am trying to use minecarts instead of a pump stack.

I've been using pure dwarf labour in the last fort. Dwarves would place the cart behind pump, then pump would be set to be operated by dwarf, then other manually operated pump would remove the surplus magma and dwarves would haul the cart away when remaining 1/7 of magma evaporates.

I've been trying to get a "glitch ramp" magma loader design that works consistently going as well.  I have gotten a few cobbled together that can handle water, but nothing yet with magma.  Maybe time to build a test area in the current fort and try a more systematic approach.

Could you use a magma-safe grate instead to get rid of the magma?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I have been playing around with this sort of thing. The problem is that while glitch ramps move a cart in magma, they won't accelerate it up to a point it can go up a ramp. The best system I've found requires the use of a pump to create an area of deep magma that then flows back into its source:

z=0
████████
,,#█≈≈≈≈
,,%█≈≈≈≈
██%█≈≈≈≈
█╔╔╔╔╔╔╔
████████
Pumping from N to S.
Tracks here are exploit/glitch ramps.
This level shows the surface of a magma sea/lake.

z-1
████████
██≈≈≈≈≈≈
██≈≈≈≈≈≈
██≈≈≈≈≈≈
████████
████████
The magma is pumped from here, and will flow back into here from above.

If the cart is dropped or rolled onto the leftmost track tile, it should get filled with magma before being accelerated away on the track.

One trick which has been proven effective is cart hammering.

Essentially you set two-three routes to use the same section, heading down into magma. Each cart has an increasing weight over the previous one. So the first goes in and stops at the bottom, then the second heavier one goes in, hits the first cart hard enough to knock it up the ramp, and out, then the third cart hits the second. While the first cart gets pushed up dumped and returned to the start where it knocks out the third.

Alternately, try having the magma channel filling area be two tiles wide between ramps. Sometimes that works better than having a single tile at the bottom.
