What differences in gameplay do you get when temperature
« on: November 26, 2007, 01:03:00 pm »

I know that ponds won't refill, dwarves won't get a bad thought from rain, magma is less dangerous. Though what does turning these things off negatively effect? Wondering if the FPS gain is worth it.

game speed will increase by about 50%. i think if you don't have a new computer, you have turn it off.
but i did not know that lave becomes less dangerous - i lost a miner building lava channels (turned weather/temp off after a year, not sure wether it was on or off when i lost him)

magma won't burn/melt things. fire won't destroy things (in fact I don't think anything can burn at all). water won't freeze in the winter, and if it's already frozen it won't ever unfreeze. I think ponds don't dry up either but I'm not sure on that one.

weather has almost no effects on dwarf mode right now, and temperature has almost no effect unless you have magma or your map freezes. if you are playing on a hot+ climate with no magma you can shut them both off without any real difference in gameplay.

Yeah, water evaporation isn't regulated by temperature or weather as far as I can tell.

In my most recent fortress I have everything on, and windmills work fine.  In my previous fortress I had weather turned off and I could not get a windmill to function anywhere on the map.  Presumably these facts are related, but nothing about it is mentioned on the wiki page for windmills.

It would make sense, though.

windmills work fine with weather off.

some maps just don't have any wind, though I'm not sure offhand if there is a pattern to it and if so which maps don't.
