Why can't you embark to some places?
« on: June 02, 2008, 05:10:00 pm »

Is there a way to get the game to let you embark anywhere? Even if it's an inhospitable mountain with no trees-- which seems to be to common preventer. Ever since I got the Regional Prospector, there's all these excellent places in the middle of a mountain that aren't an option. =/

You can't embark if the fort is located 100% on mountain, ocean, or lake biomes. Dwarves can't park the wagons in the water and the mountains are too hard to get it up to.

leave at least one square of the embark area on any other biome and you can embark there.

you wouldn't think it would be a problem with some of the "Dwarven Airdrop" looking embarks we've all seen..

Well you see, the DRAG (Dwarf Royal Air Guard, the ones who control airdrops) refuses to launch innocent civilians into hostile terrain such as mountains or lakes.  They will only accept a launch order if it is directed at hospitable terrain, whereupon the wagon is loaded up and the dwarves begin the countdown.

Unfortunately, the airdrop specialists of the DRAG have piss-poor aim.  As such, airdropped parties will oftentimes find themselves in the worst possible locations.

Silly, they aren't an air-force, Dwarves HATE flying.
They pack the wagon, put all 7 dwarves and the animals in the wagon, load the wagon into a giant catapult, and then fling it over natural obstacles. Their aim sucks not because of any fault of their own, as they are top notch. Their aim sucks because of wind variation magnified over miles and miles of travel.
Remember how I said dwarves hate flying?
They don't care at all about the emigrants they are transporting. They just care about keeping their own feet on the ground.

DRAG: Let me get this straight. You want me to land your cart in the middle of those mountians?
Setteler: No! We scouted out the place. There is a 3x3 patch of lush, green grass in the middle of those mountians, with a chasm, magma, river, adamantine, sand and flux in a 2x2 area.
DRAG: Well, okay. We'll launch you. Not like we care.
Setteler: When do we embark?
DRAG: Now.
*Pulls lever, launching the cart and settelers*

Kinda odd how only the corner of the fortress needs to be on green grass.

Well, that's just it;  the more skilled a dwarf is at catapult operation, the worse his aim gets.  DRAG recruits only the most skilled dwarves from the mountainhomes, so they end up with the worst shots.

They eat dangerous birds on the wagon's way.

Someone needs to draw a wagon hurtling through the air, the mules with their mouths full of birds, dwarves leaning out the sides swilling ale from stone mugs. It would menace with spikes of win.

Also: wagons can travel over brooks. Yet I cannot plant a fortress at the source of a brook in the mountains. The requirement seems to be a tile of green stuff. You can't stick your fortress entirely in the desert either, as far as I can tell, if it has no vegetation.

I'm pretty sure deserts are okay, actually. After all, barren tundra and even solid glaciers are acceptable.

I have a proud desert fortress named Severehames.  Not a drop of water in sight, but apparently underground sand is arable enough to grow a gazillion plump helmets.  On the other hand, these plump helmets grow on hard rock with just a splash of water on it, so I guess they're a pretty hardy crop : )
