Community Tilesets/Graphics Sets Gallery
« on: December 26, 2012, 09:34:49 pm »

When adding a new set, make a post which uses this template (the lines enclosed with brackets), just edit the text accordingly and paste it into your post. If you don't, it will make this way harder and slower than it needs to be and there's no guarantee that the set will be added quickly. The gallery link is optional and only needed if you want to showcase more than one image. Duplicate entries are also allowed if you think that you can showcase the set better/in a different way, I'll do my best to extend the gallery then accordingly.

I know there is the Tileset repository and the Graphics set repository in the The Dwarf Fortress Wiki, but these are incomplete and very outdated. I think creating an easily accessible thread where people can simply post a screenshot of their Dwarf Fortress instance (preferably part of the menu + part of a busy section of your fortress) with the given tile/graphic set would make things easier.

If this actually turns out to be a good idea, I'll try to keep the very first post of the tread (this one) updated with what the users here have posted and assemble it into some kind of big gallery. Some rules need to be set though: Please explicitly state the type of set (tile/graphics), its name and version at the time of the screenshot and if available an URL to its website/forum. A good and reliable image hosting service is imgur.

Following up with the Phoebus and Ironhand graphics set, which are also easily installable via the Lazy Newb Pack. Also the default ASCII tileset, just because I can.

I'm not a moderator so I can't really enforce this, but if you could please follow this template that would be perfect, else we will have incomplete/erroneous entries, image that distort the forum layout etc. The gallery link is optional and only needed if you want to showcase more than one image. Duplicate entries are also allowed if you think that you can showcase the set better/in a different way, I'll do my best to extend the gallery then accordingly.

How are they outdated? The graphics set repository might be, but the tileset repository is not. If people want to upload another one, they can, the wiki is much easier for everyone to keep updated than posting in a thread hoping for the original poster to update. I updated it to add mine, for instance. Plus, the sheer amount of tilesets available would quickly make the thread unwieldy.

If you feel graphics sets, tilesets, or screenshots are missing, then add them to the wiki. Plus, we already have a stickied thread linking to popular tilesets and graphics sets. If you feel some are missing, feel free to post in there with your link request.

All that being said, if you really want to use my screenshots to preview mine, go right ahead.

Well for one "Jolly Bastion", one of the more popular tilesets which has been around for at least a few months is still missing from the Tileset repository page currently (as are more I'm sure), same goes for the graphics sets probably too. I mentioned in the first post why I created this thread, see the first paragraph. Adding to and updating the wiki at a later date were part of my plans, yes -- but seeing as the forum is far more well-visited than the wiki will ever be, this is IMHO a better place to gather screenshots and links from the crowd. Not everyone actually cares about having a complete wiki or a list of graphics- and tilesets and thus wouldn't even consider updating the wiki; I didn't plan on doing this entirely alone.

Regarding your concerns about the growing unwieldiness of the thread: I don't think such problems will arise in the future, especially if people read the first post and use the template. If you still think this is a bad idea then don't contribute and it will quickly get buried :-\.

It's a wiki, update it yourself.

It's a wiki, update it yourself.

Some people are on here more then the wiki *cough* like most that ask simple questions *cough*
so maybe a secondary source (as long as it's updated regularly) would be nice, perhaps a few links to the wiki is in order too

Tilesets http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository
Graphic Sets http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Graphics_set_repository
and a wiki article all about "tilesets" http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tilesets

also if this is still gonna live add Morghoth's tileset, it is fairly nice and Bloax made a larger version of it, which is also nice

If at all in your abilities please try to read instead what I have said in the first few posts, thank you.

@Hugo_The_Dwarf: Yes, this is still gonna live, I will update the first post tomorrow. (Also please use the template provided in the first post, don't want to set a bad example!)

I did. You should still edit it yourself if you feel it's outdated.

Apparently you didn't, because I already mentioned that I would do that at some point, making your comment seem somewhat misplaced:

I added entries for Taffa's and Morgoth's tilesets -- next time please use the template and post these yourself, so I can easily integrate them into the first post.

There is a matrix tileset: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=60176.msg3167194#msg3167194

EDIT: Huh? There was a template?

Thanks for the heads up, and I know that, but this is supposed to be a team effort and I'm planning to extend the gallery bit by bit. If you use any of these sets you could just take a screenshot of a part of your fort and follow the instructions in the very first post, that would make things go quicker, as intended.
