better fishing location descriptions
« on: December 17, 2012, 08:25:31 pm »

While I don't really like the omnipotent messages showing up regarding fishing, and the lack there of.  Like even the best fisherman know when their is no more, ha.  They just know when they are no longer hungry or taking the bait(nibbling).  But that aside, here is my suggestion to Toady.

SUGGESTION: When ya get to fixing up Fishing, could better coordinates and descriptions be included?  Examples to follow...

Like the world region, subregion, and then the cardinals(SW, S, etc..).  I especially would like some adjective to describe the fishing pool locations in the three caverns better.   And maybe even a big catch trophy system.

Like say something like, Deep and Dark Cavern(1), Deeper and Darker Cavern(2), Deepest and Darkest Cavern(3).  Now an example to seal the deal.

The once tranquil water teems in misty delight.

Low glowing eyes eerily blink on the surface of the deepest and darkest pools of the world.

A fresh stock of mussels yawn in the stagnant alluvium.

There is nothing more to catch this season along the eastern coast of the Sea of Sweltering.

Bait squirms in the buckets, eagerly awaiting the hook.

Thanks, Knutor

It always seemed to me that lakes/fishing holes should have names, just like rivers and brooks do.  If the fort location isn't generated with them, why not have them named in play?  A fisherdwarf could name the lake after herself once she achieves legendary status;  a melancholy dwarf could name the lake after his girlfriend, lost in the war;  a pompous noble could name a lake she's never visited from the comfort of her chambers.  Fisherdwarf spam would be a lot more fun to read that way.

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

Of course, whatever you name something, it needs to be accepted by others to be really a name. Urist McGreenGables can call the local fishing hole the Lake of Shining Waters all she likes, but that doesn't mean anyone else will.
