Release Arcs
« on: December 24, 2012, 10:41:44 am »

I have read parts of the blog that Tarn keeps about DF and the monthly reports. I also have read a bunch of the Q&A sessions. I am having trouble keeping track of the features he is working on in his blog to his list of 'arcs' in his rough outline. It looks like the last major release went from .31 to .34 which means he added 3 major features right?

Also, I was reading something about the 'economy' being disabled do to it having bugs. What economy? Is this trading? I am a bit confused. Sorry its kind of hard to keep up. I have also read parts of the wiki.

Back in 40d, when a barony, the Tax Collector would show up (as did other cool guys like the Philosopher). From that point, the economy was activated. Dorfs had to pay rent, and goods had a cost. Dorfs payed for goods out of thier wages (at a building called the store), which they were payed for thier labours. Pay rates were set by the tax collector or baron IIRC. It was quite broken. Kids and legendary dwarves were exept from the system so tended to amass many items, while typical Urist McHauler couldnt earn enough to rent a room or buy socks.

Technically, release arcs as such aren't used anymore, but the name is still used for the things Toady works on, and are still useful as a grouping. The version number used to mean that a certain number of cores (necessary game components), reqs (bugfixes, other important stuff), and bloats (useful, but not truly important stuff) were coded, but that numbering scheme was abandoned with 0.31.x, and now only is an indicator as to how complete the game is (there is some sort of list still about how much given things contribute, I believe, but that list isn't public).

The economy was a fortress feature that activated at a certain point - from then on, dwarves had to rent their rooms, buy their food, and so forth, and you were encouraged to mint coins, which, well... causes some speed issues. All in all, the that economy didn't work out so well in practice.

Here's the old dev page, which lists all of the planned arcs along with the old dev items that were used to figure the version number, which was 0.(# of Cores).(# of Reqs).(# of bloats)(release letter). We've been more or less on the caravan arc for a while now.
