I remember that in the pre-Z level versions of the game, cave spiders only made webs on muddy ground near the river.  Recently I was playing a map, when I noticed that there were a couple of spider webs lying about.  Not long after, I uncovered a cave river (which opened up a world of danger for my dwarves, but that is another story).  Anyway, the point is- does the presence of small cave spiders indicate a river might be nearby?

cave spiders, small and large, appear where ever there's a underground river OR chasm.

Also, if you see fire snakes, you have lava.

What about phantom spiders?

phantom spiders appear in forests on evil maps. nothing to do with underground features

Dangit, I can't believe it.  I had this map where I struggled really hard to survive for over a year, before everyone finally died of thirst.  (There was no arable soil, so booze was not an option).

But there was an outdoor plateau that was just COVERED with cave spider webs.  There must have been a river down there that we never discovered.  The dwarves thirsted to death was walking around on top of a river!  The irony!!!
