Faster Starts: Preset starting packages
« on: December 19, 2012, 02:06:24 am »

Okay, this is kinda an immediate problem for me. Every time a new version of the game starts out, i'm kinda put off from just starting a fortress. Because each new version, i lose my saved list of skills and equipment for my dwarves, and i find the process of kitting out a new expedition to be pretty tedious.

What i propose is this: We include some default 'starting packages' of skills and gear that will get you started reasonably well in most situations, and include those in the 'embark now' option. the Current totally random skill configuration will be under 'random' for the starter packages.

This should be fairly easy for toady to pull off, and it would help new players over the learning curve a bit  better, anyone with me on this?

You can kinda do this yourself.

Just select Prepare Carefully and then choose your dwarves' skills, then press (s) to save it. Then next time it should show up underneath Prepare Carefully.

Yes, but what i was saying before is having to redo that every time there's an update is putting me off of playing. I'm either doing it with a new version, or with a different machine, and having to reset my saved settings is boring enough that i end up not bothering.

You can actually find your saved kits in the raws, so you could certainly copy-paste them from one machine to another and you might be able to use them across versions. You find them by going  Data>Init>embark_profiles . Either way, I do like your idea. It would be nice to have some more pre-set options for embark.

The problem is that no two people have quite the same idea of what a good starting setup is.
When do you start metalworking? Do you prefer having lots of miners, or high-skill miners? Do, how and when do you make a military? What industries do you need and what do you never use? Etc.
You'd need the "starting setup" to guess what anyone could need.

There's already something like that.
It's called "Embark Now!"
