Making a Map
« on: January 07, 2008, 07:28:00 pm »

Is it possible to export a map of your current fortress to an bitmap or what have you so that it reveals all the levels of your current fortress without using reveal.exe? I would like to have a general guide to the area without having the entire thing just revealed in game. I'll just pretend in my mind that it is some dwarven geological survey by a gifted dwarf :P

I presume you meant eh high-level layer types shown on the embark screen.
You could try (after making a backup) abandoning your fort and reclaiming.

That newfangled 3dwarf visualiser will show underground cave features in it's file but not rock types or ore locations.

Sometimes building a trade depot, pushing 'D', and looking around underground for some odd out of place blank areas(not full of Xes) will find yer underground features as well. But again it doesn't indicate rock types or ore veins.

It was handy when I wanted to see if a modded chasm creature worked when I couldn't find a chasm to save my life.  But both of those would only have limited use for making a map.  They'll let you know somethings there, but may not tell you exactly what.

How do these people export their entire fortress map onto the internet so you can look at it on the web? I've seen a list with several forts like this (but then again I think those only show the explored features) I may just have to load the area, use reveal and take notes, then crash the game on purpose and come back or something. :P I know reveal.exe causes problems with finding underground caves and adamantine .

How to export a comprehensive map to the web, with a few details left out in favor of getting to work on time:

Step 0: Make a copy of your save folder for backup
Step 1: Load Fortress
Step 2: Designate bottom level for mining
Step 3: Run Reveal.exe
Step 4: Under Options, Export Local Image
Step 5: Save Game and quit or Abandon the Fortress and quit or Crash the program with _the_ three fingered salute.
Step 6: Delete your save folder, replace with backup
Step 7: Use the Dwarf Fortress Map Compressor to compress the bitmaps created in step 4.
Step 8: Upload the map.

Alternately...

Step 1: Go to your save folder.
Step 2: Make a copy of your fortress' region, and give it the next available region.
Example: If you have region1, region2, region3, and your fortress is in region2, then make a copy of region3 named region4
Step 3: Open up Dwarf Fortress, load up the duplicate of your fortress, run reveal.exe.
Step 4: Save game
Step 5: Play in your original region (unreaveled), only loading the revealed copy when you want to consult.

As an aside, check out the Regional Prospector utility. I found that on the wiki recently. I don't like to reveal all the surprises, but there are occasions where I end up doing so for various reasons.

Thanks! That should help me out a lot. I know what you mean I don't want to reveal the entire map, I just want to know /if/ there are certain features or not so I can plan accordingly. I don't want to spend the entire game hoping I'll find an under ground river or lake or hoping I'll find magma ect. I can deal with it if I don't have those things, this will just save me time in discovering what I've got and what I've don't got.
