Can't find fuel.

I was playing on a map with almost no wood, so I needed to find another source of fuel.  However, try as I might, I couldn't find any Coal or Lignite.
Am I missing something?

If you have a sedimentary layer, you should be able to find some. You could also try ordering what you need from the merchant prince/liaison and have it brought by the next caravan.
Next time, you should probably look for magma.

I specifically looked for a sedimentary layer, and built my fortress there.  I couldn't find any fuel stuffs.

I had to abandon the fortress anyways, because Monkeys stole all my food and I couldn't survive till the caravan came  :(
