Loosely related to dwarfs, I feel (and not dwarfs I feel). Mythical dwarfs, in most modern adaptations, seem to be Norse, Norse with Scottish accents for some reason. The following three links are three parts of a BBC Documentary about the Vikings. There's preparing for winter, there's hoarding wealth for no apparent reason, there's the idea of a barter economy or silver-based economy (which may return to the game some day), all sorts of golden little nuggets that make the DF universe maybe that bit easier to imagine (if you wish to imagine dwarfs as Norse, that is).

Oh, and also, BBC documentary about Vikings, 3 hours long, pretty good quality - reason enough to watch it.

Not Vikings. Vikings had too much fondness for water, and that's before we get to romanticism. Nevertheless, point taken, and as a likely descendant I'll have a look.
