Hi, i seem to be only able to scroll through a section of the world when i'm ingame and don't know how to get outside the section (area around where i first embark.

Also, can someone shed some light on how to dig on levels below/ above you?
I tried adding stairs both up/down and up and down near eachother and designated the land for digging below and above the stairs but miners didn't dig (they idled)

oh and how to make  dwarves automatically build things in general, or is everything supposed to be queued?

Long story short: above level place stairs down. Level below, place stairs up exactly below the stairs down. If the stairs down are dug already, the proper square will be revealed.

Scrolling: arrow keys?

Build stuff: make workshops and tell the workshops to build stuff.

Check the wiki and maybe follow one or two tutorials. The game is quite hard to get into at first, but definately worth it.

As for scrolling, i think he means outside of the surrounding areas you start in.

As far as i know, you can't scroll outside of your little area. The only way to see outside of it, is to abandon your fortress, and start adventure mode. Adventure mode is the only way to travel around. Fortress mode keeps you in a small section.

As for automation, there are only a few jobs that the dwarfs can do automatically, so basically yes, everything is supposed to be queued (or manually designated). Although you can assign a dwarf to be your manager, who offers some help with workshops (distributing queued orders among workshops).

Hopefully the ability to see outside your embarkation area will come with the army arc, along with the ability to send dwarves elsewhere for various tasks - maybe just military tasks at first.

I think he means designating where you embark. I had the same issue, because I'm not very observent. You do this with the umhk keys, and expand or collapse your embark area with UMHK. Hope this helps, Claymore.

Same question, how do I "level below"? I dig a downward stairway and nothing happens.
