Hey guizeee (Music/art)
« on: September 12, 2012, 04:54:42 am »

Hey guys, I'm (sort of) new here. I've been playing DF for about 2 weeks and have already invested many hours into it, aside from that though I have actual hobbies which develop myself slightly more as a person than ordering Dwarves around  :D

I write my own original (mostly classical) music and draw a shed load of Maps, mainly for D&D
I've just recently completed a song I've been working on for a while (Link is below).

And for good measure, here's a village map half complete

Your music is quite awesome. Reminds me of some outtake tracks from Diablo2, and the DF music of course. :)

I don't know if it's just the camera angle, or if this is fact -- when micing an acoustic guitar for recording you should have the mic positioned a guitar-body length away from the instrument (measured from the tail end to where the neck and body join). If you have to crank the mic's gain a little to preserve the volume that's fine. Micing with the capsule toward the soundhole will have a different tone than if you mic with the capsule pointed toward where the neck joins the body -- the latter provides more high-end clarity and less boominess. I recommend experimenting with different micing positions to see which one you prefer because it can have a very large effect on the final tone of the instrument.

Hey thanks for the advice on the micing but this is the tone I usually go for. Backing away would get rid of alot of the bass in the sound and whilst usually desirable, on a solo instrumental may not be the best idea as all I'm left with is a tinny sounding video...

Appreciate the listens though guys  :D

Very nice. I hope you don't mind, I saved it to my playlist. I love that kind of playing, intricate and melodic. If you had a CD I'd throw money towards it :D

Unrelated note: Holy crap, Timotheus, you made my day. Tristram is my absolute favorite VG piece, it's awesome to hear a new variation done by the same performers. Don't know why I missed these.

Only reason I knew about it was because it came with the D2 Collectors Edition (included the soundtrack). I'm glad you liked it! It's one of my favorites too. :)

Hey guys, I've just finished recording a song I wrote about a month ago, I actually named it after one of the dwarves in my fortress (heheee)
Take a listen and tell me what you think, hopefully you'll enjoy just as much as my last ones

Wow I really enjoyed that. That's some nice sweep picking (and some really impressive chord work) and you really make use of the tone of the plectrum. Parts of it remind me of if Lennon wrote the DF song and you use some really beautiful arpeggios in there. You also do a good job of keeping each of the lines clean and discrete. If I had to make any complaints it'd be that I wish you'd uploaded a less rough recording, because you make mistakes at some of the coolest parts. But that's not a huge deal because they're not really noticeable, I'm just a stickler.

I also was kind of putoff when you smiled at pulling off that hinge barre at about 1:00. I know, I know, it's a damn impressive chord and I couldn't transition to it that well myself, so you deserve to be proud at it, but I dunno, I just felt like it kind of detracted from the accomplishment seeing your satisfaction. It's weird and it's small and it doesn't really even matter, just thought I should mention it.

Also man, that Ferling etude is nearly perfect. Your left hand is so smooth in that, it's insane. I've never even seen that on guitar, very very nice.

Hey fqllve

I have an audio only version which was recorded when I wrote the song and as such is much tighter and better played, I'm happy to give you the link if you'd like, as for the faces; It's a frequent thing in my videos, it's not on purpose either I can't really explain it, some people make orgasm faces but I just tend to laugh/smile. I'm not in anyway trying to be arrogant

Thanks for the criticism though! :D

Yeah, rationally I know that, that was just my gut reaction, but since a lot of people never get past their gut reaction I figured it was worth putting out there.

And yeah, I'd really like that link.
