Fortress and Adventure mode?
« on: December 11, 2012, 07:54:32 pm »

Though this question differs from person to person..

Which is more fun/less boring? Fortress, or adventure mode? Though, fortress mode is far too complex for me, I've just had this strong thirst of curiosity. I want to get into it, I really do, but there's so much to soak in. I want to know what you all think between both modes, and which is much more fun of an experience.

really, the mode that you find more appealing can depend upon how much initial complexity you can put up with, and that said, my biased opinion is that adventure mode is more fun than fortress mode
if you really wanna play fortress mode, and you are new, then it can help to play adventure mode first because if you do then you can figure out what stuff is more easily after having played adventure mode

I find both equally entertaining, though Adventure mode requires modding to be that way. Fortress mode is great as it is (could use refinement, but more in the hard coded department).

When I want to play a sick RPG/Roguelike, Adventure mode is what I play.

When I want to build and deal with bigger events (sieges) as well as torture an entire community of people, I play Fort mode.

I personally can not wait until the next release when we get to retire Forts so our adventurers can visit a fully functional fortress instead of an abandoned, garbage strewn mess.

It'd be quite hard to tell the difference in my case.

Worn out clothes everywhere! Mysterious stockpiles! Goods piling up in workshops! Occasional FB raids from below because I can't find the gap in my defensive wall! A lever that either floods the entire top level of the fort OR closes the outside drawbridges! An overflowing well! Never enough barrels and bins! Ghosts! An entire wing that I had to lock off due to miasma!

And those are just the recent problems.

Although, given my general level of luck in misadventuring, I wouldn't survive long enough to poke around any forts.

Their both equal in difficulty just that the only depends on if you naturally good at either micromanagement or tactical set ups.
Though I kinda have access to building and switching to and from fort mode so my views are kinda shifted.

This is a little off topic, but, I've -played- Dwarf Fortress mode. Though it's complex, I still got used to everything up to workshops. I've never established a real fort, I usually just embarked, spent several minutes building the first six or seven rooms and a grand staircase .. only to eventually get burnt out from lack of fun, and abandoning eventually.

A good tutorial is what I need.

You could try any of the tutorials listed on the wiki.  In particular, the I Play Dwarf Fortress - (And You Can Too!) seems to give a basic walkthrough, including a pregenerated embark.  I've also generated a "beginner" embark site (everything needed to make steel, plenty of trees, calm area, etc) which I could throw up on DFFD if you wanted to try that (I though I already put it there, but I guess not).  Just be prepared that fortress mode takes far longer to learn (and play) than adventure mode.  If you like the idea of building a working castle (or dungeon of death, your choice) then fortress mode is worth the effort.  Come to think of it, I think I need to get back to playing fortress mode myself...

I enjoy both modes but I find it easier to keep my focus in adventure mode. The complexity of fortress mode doesn't bother me, but the micromanaging gets overwhelming very quickly. I spend so much time paused, trying to make sure each dwarf has a job and nothing has been left abandoned, that I can hardly make any progress. I find myself very often loading up a fortress, spending ten minutes trying to decide what to do with everyone, then saying hell with it and turning it back off because I just get so overwhelmed.

well to clear up my views: Kinda play both due to both effect the region, where Fort mode effects happen when people come to you, Adventure effects happen when you come to them.
If I feel like setting up a shop and selling goods to random people then feeling like I should capture them and train up their kids as warriors I'll do it in fort mode.
If I feel like setting those kids off to kill their once king I'll do that in adventure mode.
Both feel like I'm leading up to a scenario that would be fun, and I could read back in legends mode to say "yep I caused the great child war of 1709 when a group of bandits stole a bunch of kids/farm animals and train them to assassinate a king who try to swindle me out of a nice statue of a famous histoical leader I help raise a few years back."

That's pretty much what happens with me. You explained it better than I did! x D

Yeah, I know that feel entirely. I pretty much build the workshops and start producing resources, but I really don't know where to go from there. Put in a farm, get food... But I have no idea how to actually progress. You can pretty much just start digging, but as far as technologically advancing... I'm not really sure how to get any farther.
