It was working fine, then it started to lock up and use up one of my cores.

Never happened to me.Did'ya press anything that may have made it do that?
Maybe re-installing should work.The closest thing it ever did was to freeze mid-film and make an unstoppable loop of 2 frames which you could still edit but it didn't change anything.
