Problem with ASCII visualisation
« on: February 16, 2013, 06:44:48 am »

Greetings! I've been playing DF with graphics set for a while, but later decided to use native, ASCII graphics. At first I couldn't  even understand what's going on on my screen. All i saw was a great wall of incomprehensible text. To learn what all the symbols mean, i tried to look closer at them and understand what do they resemble. That tactic works very well. :) I began to understand more and more tiles, and noticed that all of them actually look like the object they represent. With that in mind I had no trouble with ASCII...

until this day, when image of one creature lodged in my mind, shattering the sanity through thick layer of imagination

Oh god I died when I saw the statue. Amazing.

I guess "human" could technically start with a "U" sound if you have a very strange accent. Possibly.

Don't you know? All humans are badass gymnasts, able to perform unaided shoulderstands while raising their arms.

A human is you.

Actually, that wasn't the reason.  It was horses vs. humans.  We thought O was definitely going to be ogres or something, and also that U is traditionally taken by a DND monster (umber hulk) that were never going to be put in.  So the horse won the first letter race, and the human was stuck with U as a consolation prize.  There are no doubt many superior choices.

Well, at leat in spanish it starts with the "U" sound.

Note: Your elves look more badass than your dwarfs.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

That statue.

Don't you pronounce human as u-man?
This is why I thought 'U' was chosen.
