My first trap!
« on: November 19, 2012, 04:13:22 pm »

I know, it's a momentous time for every DF player - creating his or her very first killing machine *sniff*. Anyway, I present this to you for peer review and advice for improvements. It's a pretty simple cave-in principle, with one variant for for surface use, the other for compromised corridors. They're even FB-unfriendly!

Not bad, you only really need one linkage for the red mechanism, the bottomost support, pull it and the rest'll follow! At least if all of the supports are constructed, I've never used a dug one. Bridges don't support things so you don't need to link them up to make it work, but it does makes for good containment trap, or making sure that your target's not running away.

If something manage to survive all that cave in, it's probably going to survive being drowned, but you like to make sure, just in case? :D

The FB trap's pretty simple, nothing to comment, other suggesting possibly having an obsidanizer for renewing upper block for reusable designs.

By the way, congratulation on your first planned deathtrap!

The only serious piece of advice I can give is to always make sure that you have a solid layer of stone beneath any cave-in trap. Else it'll carry on happily downwards through the swimming pool, the dining room, the farms, and anything else that has the misfortune to be beneath it until it hits solid ground.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Definitely this, I always forget to consider this when advising cave-in traps because it's a habit for me nowadays. At least when it comes to aboveground construction, I always skip a level so my surface project don't caves into the residency :D

Even just a solid wall under the trap should work, I've stopped cave-ins with constructed walls under the thing. As long as the walls stays supported.

Just stone, or will sand, clay etc. stop it also?  Eh, *shrugs* I always start by digging deep to make room for stuff like this in the first place - I don't believe in temporary forts, and like leaving space for the future.

Full tiles will do the job, even constructed walls, as long as it's supported beyond the cave in area.

I suggest putting cage traps on the bottom to capture whatevers still alive, that way you wont use any water.

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

Damn, I didn't got anything! How this should work??
As I can supose, orggs will step on pressure plate and watch distant collapse/waterfall?

The first small thing that made me feel awesome was my indoor waterfall. A few minutes later though, it started flooding my fort so I felt less awesome.

The trap is operated manually with levers. When a creature steps onto the trap, the retracting bridges of either side trigger to trap them there, and the supports are collapsed.

As to cage traps, wouldn't they be crushed by the tons of rock falling on them?

Oh, and feel free to use my design, it's not like I can stop you :-).

Cage traps should be fine if it's on top of everything. It probably will be crushed if it's between or under plates, though.
