Storing liquids
« on: November 18, 2012, 11:59:59 pm »

Hey!

Recently I've started a new fortress; which is partially in an evil biome. I've noticed it to be frequently raining bitter slime all over the evil biome.
Is there any way I could position a barrel or container of some sort in the area affected by the evil rain; to be collected or used in some sort of way?

Also any dwarf or animal that walks across the evil area covered in slime, appear to become dizzy. how does it affect them? do they gain any negative thoughts from becoming dizzy?

 :)

I don't think you can collect fluids... yet. Except through custom reactions, but those are for water and stuff.

Dizzyness, I believe, affects their stats for the duration of the effect. Possibly also the quality of their work or combat.

I highly recommend you keep an eye on anyone affected by the slime. Not all syndrome effects are immediate.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Thanks.

I some how got the idea that leaving a barrel in the affected area would gain the slime covering; and some how over time turn into a barrel full of slime  :P

I'm pretty sure that rain barrels have been suggested many times, if that made it in then it'd work for strange rains too.

The only way I've been able to weaponise rain like that is to build a loooong walkway to your base and hope that they get rained on, on the way.

What you could do is have a cistern full of water open to the rain, separate from your drinking water/waterfalls/decon chambers (important).  That should collect contaminants.  Alternatively, you could save the water from your decon chamber itself, so when your contaminated dwarves walk though and get washed off, the contaminants are collected.

But yes, definitely keep an eye on those dwarves.  They might suddenly melt for no reason, or go blind, even if there aren't any immediately noticeable effects besides the dizziness.

I like to think that on the other side of the world a human is walking on the beach, notices the water level suddenly drop twenty feet, and whispers "fucking dwarves."

Yeah, the only liquids that exist in the game are technically water and magma
but things can become contaminated with liquids
my idea for weaponizing this would be to have an automated minecart system, where the minecart gets filled with water, moves out under the rain, and then returns to be loaded into a minecart shotgun. I've been reading that contaminates do in fact travel with the water when its shot out of a minecart, so using this method you could infect any potential invaders! or cats
