Need a new laptop
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:22:16 pm »

I am currently out of a laptop. I want something good for running dwarf fortress and other indie games, and good for programming on, and I want it to be linux compatible. Any advice? My Grandpa's offered to buy it for me, but I don't know how much he wants to spend, so I figured I'd send him a list of laptops ranging from $400 to $1000 something.

Maybe this:

Dont aim for a budget gaming laptop as it will turn out crap and with poor battery life.  Stick with more general purpose laptop and it will last for years, especially with most indie games..

Do you really need a laptop to waste time while on move or would a desktop with 3x the power be better for tasks?

A laptop I can use on the bus and take to college. My desktop is perfectly sufficient.

Also, the Sony VAIO T13 (SVT13112FXS) seems to have a problem with Linux, at least from one review I found.

Try and get something with the best singular core (if it's got multiple, that's fine, but a good main core) and good like, graphics/video/sound cards. And RAM. Tip, intel cards are not gaming cards. Don't believe them.

Vostro 3560

runs on a 3rd gen i5
radeon hd 7670M graphics
with customizing and crap it would be around 700-780 dollars

The Vostro series is a business class from Dell which i can say is probably the best laptop i seen in years coming from them.

That really sounds good, even without customizations out-of-box it would be a good start.

I recommend leaving the hardcore gaming to your desktop, and getting a laptop with a modest graphics card. Intel, coincidentally, often works closely with the OSS community. Insofar as programming, my opinion is that the hardware demands for compiling code haven't changed much, so any modern chip will suffice.

To play Dwarf Fortress, I'd recommend a dual-core... any, really. There'll be a small amount of tweaking (e.g. lowering the max population, genning small regions) but I've played DF successfully on laptops some would consider obsolete. Really, the only criteria I'd have is a numpad. Without it, DF is a hassle to play.

Here's an example. I'm a cheapskate and buy refurbished often. It's never steered me wrong, but your mileage may vary.

I recommend starting your own thread and giving more info.
What's your budget?
What are you going to use it for?
Etc.

I can recommend the ASUS R701V. It has Ivy Bridge, 8Gb RAM, and a 2Gb GeForce 630M. It is both good for DF as well as graphical applications. It also has HDMI, if you have a use for that. Installing Linux on it supposedly is somewhat hard, but possible if you search the netz for a how-to. It cost me 990 euro 5 months ago (in Holland, including OS/WIN7), so it should be somewhat cheaper nowadays, and if you plan on using only Linux, you might be able to save cash on the OS as well.
