Werelizard Squad
« on: November 16, 2012, 04:18:25 pm »

The fortress was attacked by a Werelizard, the very first lycanthrope to ever attack me. My dorfs fought valiantly, but one died and another was wounded, and the Werelizard reverted into a human and managed to high-tail it out before anyone could take him down. I buried my dead and went about my business.

Some of you know where this is going.

I was busy building my hospital when the surviving dorf turned into a werelizard, much to my shock and surprise. The battle was fierce, and somehow I managed to take it down without losing anyone. Of course, there were many wounded, but I finished the hospital and set them to rest. But then came the dawning realization that they, too, were most likely going to turn.

And so, regrettably, I sealed off the hospital as they lay in bed.

Time passed and they became hungrier and hungrier. I wondered if, maybe, I had made a mistake. And just as I was considering releasing them, the full moon hit and they turned. Well, as it turned out, not all of them had been infected, but those that hadn't were quickly torn apart by the werelizards.

Meanwhile, another dorf that had managed to hide her wounds turned while in her room. I was able to seal her in the first time, but the second time around she smashed down the door. Miraculously, she harmed no one after that, and now I have her sealed on the roof of a walkway.

Two werelizards in the sealed hospital, one out on a walkway... I'm going to build them a housing facility outside the fortress, accessible only via a bridge, and keep them in reserve for the next ambush or siege. I'm trying to think how I might be able to make more, but I don't see how I could do it without having another massacre on my hands...

Yea, weres are rather a disappointment right now.
They're difficult to get into fight and a single ogre can bite heads of two of those.
Also, their cycle isn't month, it's around 25 days or so, thus you need to constantly recalculate the time of next transformation.
And to confirm a were-infection you need to closely inspect combat logs, only bites count, if a bodypart is bitten off it doesn't count.

The best way to infect your dwarves is to fully armor a dwarf as best as you can and then station them in a room with a single weredwarf. Hopefully they will survive which is the only requirement for being fully healed come the next fully moon (which should have an indicator in the top corner of the screen).

And the real benefits to having werebeasts isn't so much that they are powerful in their were form, but rather that it allows them to heal from any injury short of death every full moon. Thus giving you a fairly immortal fighting force that is immune to maiming and dismemberment.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Provided they survive their injuries until the next full moon. Until then, they behave just like vanilla dwarves, no quick healing other than transformation. Just to clarify.
Also, IIRC the transformation resets their thirst/hunger bars. Does that mean they'll never die to dehydration or starvation? Will they reach unhappy thought levels of these before they reset? Also, will they just drop all their clothes when they transform, and get unhappy when they turn back into naked dwarves? I imagine a stark raving mad werebeast dwarf can be... inconvenient fun.

Yes

Yes, they will also get alcohol withdrawal

No. They drop their clothes but are rather quick in picking them up again. Just make sure you give them armour to wear or else make lots of cloth clothes, as were-dwarves tend to wear down their clothes upon transformation.

Oh and you really don't need that much isolation for your were-dwarves. I find it's better to keep them close really, and they can be kept reliably safe behind 4-6 doors or so. They make great specialist military Dwarves.
