Loading minecarts
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:09:40 am »

In a situation where I have twenty items to be loaded into a minecart for trans, I end up with twenty haulers arriving togther, each pick up a single item and place it in the cart.  Which is my best bet to resolve to get a few dwarves to load multiple items instead?  My load sites are grouped by industry: metal, agriculture and stone.

1.  Enable only certain dwarves to perform certain hauling task types, three stone haulers, three metal haulers and three ag haulers.

2.  Create industry burrows and assign 3 haulers to each.

3.  Kill 17 haulers as punishment and hope future haulerw hear of the massacre and dont repeat their predecessors mistake.

Ideally id like to minimize pointless walking for dwarves.

Best you can do is to specialize the haulers. Burrows don't acts very well for hauling job, at least I've never got it to play nice with multiple hauling works.

Go with 1. If your dwarves can only haul a certain thing, then they'll do it when they can, and not other things. I'd also advise having a few food-only haulers if you have very busy fortress, to make sure food get set properly.

A few jobs will be done regardless of their labor setting ( carrying things to trade depot, for one, I can't recall other jobs, probably levers too but you can profile them ).
