need dwarf fortress help
« on: November 13, 2012, 10:08:49 am »

Well, here i go...

first of all, i am using the ironhand tileset, so what does the red arrows mean?

second, nothing exciting happens at my fortresses, i build up a sustainable fort (I think) and the whole thing is very boring, the only thing to do is fix small errors that happen all the time.

no forgotten beasts, no seiges, nothing.

plus the wiki isn't very clear, so i learned all i need to know by playing the game.

help.

Are you on an island? that'd stop everything but underground forgotten beasts.

Elsewhere you can check before embark using the finder and tab so you can see all the civs, red line or WAR means they'll come getcha, dependant on location too.

You need more than 80 dwarves or a million wealth to trigger default goblin siege and titans/forgotten beasts.

If all else, dig deep, dig into the bluemetal, and it'll very quickly get deadly exciting.

It's only as boring as you want it to be!

I tweak my embark settings so I get attacked earlier, harder and more often. It makes it more exciting but harder. Sometimes I embark where nothing can hurt me.

Even in perfectly peaceful areas there is plenty of fun to be had... Try building your own projects or experimenting with things you've never used before (magma + pumps is always fun).

When I'm bored, I play a shooter/mmorpg.  Has Planetside 2 come out?

Not quite, soon. Though it's no way near ready (been in beta for a couple of months). No one in the beta community wants it to be released yet. They'll still implementing major changes and release is like next week.

If you want to talk about other games take it to the Other Games forum (the Planetside 2 thread is here).

@OP: As others have pointed out if you embark on an island then you won't get visited by other civilizations then the dwarves. When you embark check with the Tab key to make sure that other races can reach you, specifically the goblins if you want ambushes. Also keep in mind that if you want large sieges instead of ambushes then you need at least 80 dwarves in vanilla (wealth has no effect on whether or not sieges occur, though it does have an effect on their size IIRC). Alternatively digging down and starting  to mine adamantine is a guaranteed way to have !!FUN!!.

You could declare war on your home civilization by killing the mountainhome diplomats (through direct military action, not unfortunate accident) next time they arrive.  Note that this may result in fun coming from unexpected directions.

Option 1: You are on an island. You will never meet anyone but dwarves. Re-embark.

Option 2: You are on an island. You will never be attacked. Megaproject.

If you are talking about arrows flashing over your dvarves, then red is for unhappiness, brown for drowsiness and blue for thirst.

If your dwarves are unhappy, your fort is likely not 100% FUN-free (And if it is, it won't be for long). Find out why. Remember that dwarves are the most insidious threat a fortcan face.

I've found that the sieges will come.

Just when you think it's safe...
