Just out of curiosity...if I make a maximum size bridge, could I atom-smash entire sieges with it?

Well, you thinking about a bridge 999x999 but i think the max range of a bridge is 10x10, you can still ato-smash a entire siege if you lure then in this space.

Probably not, some creatures are too big for bridges, and I suspect that if there're too many goblins under/on one bridge, it have trouble.

The number of critters and their combined mass doesn't matter actually.  A single unsmashable critter will prevent you from smashing any of them though.  So if the goblins ride some jabberrers or equally nasty things into the siege, you won't be smashing many goblins.

It is perfectly possible to make smasher corridors and similar traps to smash most or all of a siege if they don't contain too many of these monsters.  Or you can just build a trap corridor with weapon traps which don't care.

Just connect a lot of bridges to one lever! It should have the same effect essentially. :P

It's entirely possible to pave the entire landscape with bridges, link them all to one lever and use it as a doomsday switch.

:D I think I am going to do this.

Can you imagine the sight by incoming sieging races?

Personally, I would leave all the bridges down until enemies show up. Fling them once or twice, then send the troops out into the masses of fractured goblins. Less effective, but too much effectiveness is boring in DF.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Yes, less is more when it comes to DF.
That being said, I know what my next megaproject is gonna be.

Which begs the question of what happens if two bridges are built so that when they are raised, they create a wall, and anything that they would throw is "sandwitched" between them.

It's basically another atomsmashing. The scissor-bridge fort entrance works a lot like this. It flings troops into the walls and crushes them, or leaves them vulnerable to crossdwarfs. Really useful

I personally prefer traps where the bridges are raised and all that are on it fall 25z levels to thier splattering death in a pit. I generall wall the pit and at the top of the stairs out of it I have a cave crocodile or some other giant dangerous animal which can easily kill off the few injured survivors of the fall. Then my dwarves can just pick up the armor/weapons/cloth of the monsters and I flush out the corpse bits with water which runs out the fortified end of the map (cant dig the end of the map but you can fortify it which means water can run out with stuff out of the map).
