None of my dwarves are responding!
« on: November 11, 2012, 11:18:39 pm »

So, I'm about 2 years into my 4th fort, and so far it has been very successful. That is, until all of my dwarves decided to stop listening to my orders. Its literally all across the board, not one single labor seems unaffected. Some of the things that aren't happening include:

-mining designations being dug out
-items built at any of my workshops
-crops being tended
-plants being gathered
-furniture placement
-stone smoothing/engraving
-constructions never being finished
-the list could just keep going on and on....

Some of the things I have tried to do to fix it:
-Toggling suspension of tasks
-Cancelling and re-designating tasks
-Toggling labors through Dwarf Therapist

Other things of note:
-Therapist is saying my fuzzy little guys are ranging from ecstatic to fine in their moods, no one is feeling worse than that.
-This started happening shortly after I started getting spammed with messages of cancelling store item in stockpile...item is inaccessible or drop off is inaccessible.
-I have checked every single stairway and door to make sure nothing is blocking movement, and both of the stockpiles I am getting spam from are on the first 2 levels of the fort and have been in use since we embarked.
-For nearly every job there is a dwarf with the labor enabled for it with a 'no job' description.
-I have never save scummed.

Does any one know what the issue here is? I've been lurking around the forum for a couple months now, and I'm not too terribly dumb, but I am stumped. I've tried searching the forum and the wiki, but I either don't know the right search terms or the info isn't there. My fortress has ground to a halt, and I feel like the FUN was just about to begin. Thanks for reading!

tl;dr: None of my dwarves are obeying commands and I don't know why.

Sounds like you may have blocked your dwarves off somehow. Maybe you built a ramp wrong, and no one can get out? You may have also added everyone into a burrow that does not include the areas you wish to operate in, but this is a more rare issue.

I think it's the latter of Tally's suggestions.  This sounds like a burrows problem to me.  (Check that wiki link for details.)

Did you turned on civilian alert?

Whatever it is, it's pathable to ( because of inaccessible message ), so it's not path being cut off. It's burrows or civilian alert burrow issues, I'm guessing.

I've had this happen to me before in my forgetfulness :D

Given the spam of cancellation messages, it sounds like they can't get out from the surface. Have you tried finding one of your miners and seeing if they can dig an alternate pathway to the surface? If dwarves start mobbing it all of a sudden, there you go, something blocked the normal way out of the fort.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am at work so I'll look into the burrow idea when I am done. It definitely is not a ramp issue because I don't have any ramps. The dwarves I get the spam messages from are standing in the stockpile, one is a stone stockpile about 90% full of chalk and marble, which I have been using the whole time, the other a nearly empty food stockpile one z level down from the stone stockpile. In both cases the dwarf is already standing in the stockpile.

If it is a burrow I would be surprised because I have onle one that encompasses the first 3 z levels of my fort, which contain all of my workshops, the two stockpiles I get spam from, some of my farm plots, and some other tasks that have not been completed;  it is just supposed to keep them inside during a siege or ambush, neither of which has happened, so the burrow was never intentionally activated and the drawbridge to the outside has never been raised.

I had an issue early on in this fort where my mason insisted on hauling plump helmets instead of building constructions, despite her hauling labors being turned off through therapist and the labor screen. I just kept toggling her labors until she stopped. It took a long time.

Did you turned off let everyone harvest in the orders? it's o > h

Dwarves will try to haul anything they picks up from the farm to the nearest stockpile, it's been particularly annoying for specialist farmers since I like them to just pull the plant and go to the next one or seed, and not haul them.

Did you maybe accidently delete a portion of the burrow (that you maybe accidently activated) so that the 2 (or more) portions are no longer connected through logical tiles?

Also, did the mentioned labors work, i.e. did this happen ouf the blue?

My son, many speak of the honor in war.
My preferred method is to wait until their back is turned, then impale them with a pike held by someone else.
Preferrably from a distance.

Burrow tiles don't need to be connected to function.

Try building stuff in different places and seeing what the list of building materials is. That's usually a good way of determining connectivity, and it's quicker than activating dwarves, stationing them, and checking the units lists to see if you get a 'location inaccessible' message where the 'Station' job should be.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Double check the alerts and order another staircase built.
