Will wild birds lay eggs...
« on: November 10, 2012, 02:07:15 am »

I just captured some Giant Peach Faced Lovebirds.

Do I need to tame them to get them to reproduce?

Or will they reproduce on their own?

I don't know if you need other ideas when you have magma.

I don't believe wild animals will breed under any circumstances.  Egg layers or not.  Taming them should fix this though, I think.

Just confirming his post. Wild Animals aren't programmed to breed, they basically just drift from one edge of the map to the other.

Wild animal that does NOT lays eggs will breed, the egg-layers need nest box, which wild animals can NOT use.

If you want egg-laying creatures, you'll have to tame them.

A note that taming them and giving them a pasture is not very hard to do at all. Just make sure they are trained before you try and move them!

"trained" birds can breed also. Also, chicks are very easily "tamed" so after taming them, you can remove the "any trainer" or whichever trainer you have assigned to them, as tame will not go back to under that.

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

Actually I believe that non egg-laying wild animals do breed. I'm sure I got a wild bugbat being born (complete with the announcement) down in the caverns in this version. No idea about egg layers though.

Yeah, wild animals definately breed. I accidentally trapped three wild giant dingos in my fortress, so I walled them up and forgot about them. Every now and again I'd get messages telling me the dingos had babies. I didn't have any tame ones and I think there was like 15 of them before I decided to break down the wall, trap and tame them.

Wild birds (and snakes, and lizards) won't breed  though because they can't assign themselves to nestboxes unless tame.
