i tested it a bit more, and success! I am able to generate a world with only 5 years of history.  this proves something happened to the RAM!  i'm still trying to fix, but now we know what's wrong.  thanks to all of you for your help :)  will tell you when it's finally fixed, and you'll all get your military dwarf

That's probably best case for the "which part is broken" game. RAM is relatively cheap. Congrats =)
