How to get dogs?
« on: November 08, 2012, 03:06:48 am »

I want to catch and train up some dogs.

I think i need a dog in a cage in an animal training zone and a dwarf with Animal Trainer skill (plus some food to feed the dog - do they just eat raw meat?)

However how do you catch a dog and get it in a cage.  Hunting kills things and trapping only seems to apply to vermin.

The DF2012:Dog wikki doesn't seem to cover how you actually 'get' a dog.

thanks

you can rarely to never be happy to see wild dogs in your location and try to catch them in cages then tame then breed then train (common way to get wild animal).
Or you can ask caravan to bring you some or wait for them to do it occasionally (because i don't remember if you can ask liaison for dogs).

all you need is to get a breeding pair to breed them and to war-train them you should assign em to pasture and assign trainer to them (via 'z'-animals menu). You will have option to war-train them.

Build a cage trap (b, SHIFT-T, c), probably several. You need a cage and a mechanism and a place where the wild dogs usually pass by. But do you really have wild dogs on your map?
Alternatively, some caravans bring tamed dogs.

thanks - i just assumed there be wild dogs on all the outdoor maps - getting them from caravans sounds much better

i usually embark with a pair of dogs

so from what you said...

i don't need to put trained dogs in cages
i use a zone to set up a pasture
assign dogs to pasture
make sure i have a dwarf set to 'animal training'
wait for dogs to be trained then allocate them to guard duty or to dwarves
aslo...
wait for puppies?  I assume these will auto allocate to the pasture and can then be trained

a thought - pastures??
don't they have to be outside and have grass?  why do dogs need this?

what are kennels used for?

cheers

Any zone anywhere will do, set it for t: Animal training, not pasture. Trainer dwarf will automatically move there dogs set for training in z:Animals screen.

Kennels are only used for catching and taming live vermin. They used to be where war dog training happened in older versions of the game, but now taming and training "big" animals happens in animal training zones.

Pastures are not required, as Dremire already said. But you could set up a pasture for dogs to roughly keep them in a certain area (anywhere, no grass needed), for example to guard the entrance to your fort.

In the current version, Kennels are only used to capture and tame vermin (small animals). Only in earlier versions were they used for real (large) animals.

There're no such thing as wild dogs, unless you're using a mod. Closest is wolves, I don't know which biome have them but they exists.

Tame vermins are good for selling to caravans or for dwarven pets, they don't paths so that's something! I don't know if cats'll try to eat them, though.
