I like sending lords because I imagine a bunch of Gimlies dressed like they belong in 300 stabbing everything in sight . I minimize the use of traps.

20%? I conscript every Male into my Armies after I have enough females to take care of basic needs.

So much waste of dwarfpower. If it has a beard, it can hold a weapon, as my mother used to say.
Males >>> melee
Females>> ranged squads, fortress guard (also ranged)

Well, I personally don't like to see mothers carrying there babies to war, which is why I make the exception.

Only the males? I enlist every male and female into my armies and that's it. They've all got to learn farming and masonry too, because what use is a Dwarven army that cannot build a fort nor brew its own brew?
