Generally when you've got a dwarf about to die, who you want to save and you ask for help about.... usually you leave the game paused until you hear something, or it's been too long and you don't expect to hear anything anymore.

Even though she's not savable anymore, there's a few things you could have tried.

Could she path into the fortress?  You could have checked that by making some job right next to her, build a single wall segment beside her or something, ensure that a worker can get from the fortess to her - if not, that same obstacle's keeping her from getting inside.

Was she a new migrant?  Did she have the designation trader?  If so, there was no way you could have saved her, 'traders' are not really part of your fortress and are buggy.

There's a few other things to check but that's where I'd have started.  Good luck.

I had this happen to me the other day, only it was with my legendary mason.

I foolishly had her block up an up/down staircase which opened into a cavern--which, now that I think about it, explains why she couldn'y get back up. Darn.

Perhaps a more constructive question might be: will dwarves ever get hungry/thirsty enough that they stop moving? i.e., will they lose the energy to climb up a long flight of stairs, etc.

A corollary would be: Will dwarves ever work themselves to the point that they can't make it back to a food source in time?  i.e., if I send a dwarf to work in a far-distant part of the mines, will he work himself hungry, then discover that he can't make himself back to the food source in time and starve?

No and no. Dwarves might become "hungry" due to working for a long period, but they will never make it to starving (since after they finish the task that made them "hungry" they will immediately go eat). The only times dwarves would go work someplace and then become starving is if you have them block themselves off, which appears to be what happened to you.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

In earlier versions at least, if the only food stockpile was really far away, a hungry dwarf could starve to death before reaching it.

... Looking back, I have no idea why I put the food stockpiles on the other corner of the map relative to the workshops.

It's possible for dwarves to get hungry/thristy enough to die on trip back to the food and drink stockpile, but it's a rather freak event since it'd have to be very far. I also suspect that other dwarves will try to get a bucket of water or food over there first.

They won't be standing there, though, they'd be trying to run to the stockpiles, if they -can- path to it.

It's only happened to me a few times from accidental boxing in of dwarves too long at magma sea without interim food stops, and I've seen dwarves move and drop buckets of water and food mid-way there once the poor bugger's died. They're at least smart enough to start running for food as soon as they gets hungry enough!
