DOSBox Troubles
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:15:53 pm »

Okay, so I have found 3 games that I have fallen in love with problems.

1: Shadow President. I followed the tutorial pretty much exactly, then this:

C:\SHADOW~1>SHADOW
Illegal Command: SHADOW. Shadow, as far as I know, is the start-up to the game. I tried putting SHADOW.EXE as well... Wait, just fixed it myself, never mind.  :P

2: SimLife and SimEarth: For some reason, a long time ago, I told something to open with Notepad accidentally instead of winRAR, so my .zip files are cursed to roam my computer as Notepads for all eternity and that is stopping me from even running them.

All this is on a Vista, if that helps at all.

I'm not sure about Vista, but shouldn't you just be able to set the default program back to Winrar?

Yeah.  I think you can just right click then go to Open With, and choose WinRar in the menu again.

Yes, I was able to change the default program back to winRAR, but I think my problem is that it doesn't open like a normal file, it automatically opens in winRAR, which is preventing DOSBox from having any idea what's happening.

I forgot to include this, I get this message (again, if it helps): Unable to change to: simlife/SimEarth

Yeah, make sure you use WinRAR (or 7-zip, it's better) to unpack the files. With dosbox, you'll often also have to look around the file directory to find the actual executable, so be sure to do that. If you happen to have a manual available, it will tell you as well.

Okay, I extracted the files, and now they open normally. Good. Even better, DOSBox is recognizing them. But Now I have another problem.

I had to rename the 'Sim Life' folder "SimLife" so it worked. Anyway, DOSBox tells me that I can't get to the game for some reason, the name of the application is sml. That's it.

I really have no idea what to do, but if anyone knows, it would be much appreciated.

What exactly is the error that DOSBox is reporting?  What directory are you in, where is the file, and what does DOSBox complain about exactly?

For some reason, a long time ago, I told something to open with Notepad accidentally instead of winRAR, so my .zip files are cursed to roam my computer as Notepads for all eternity and that is stopping me from even running them.
For Vista:

Control Panel -> Default Programs -> click Set your Default programs

You should see notepad in that list. Select it and click Choose Defaults for this Program
uncheck the .zip and save it.

If you want to re-associate it with winzip, you can do that from the same window or you can do it from the winzip options/preferences.
