Baron noble position missing; due to strange mood?
« on: November 05, 2012, 10:03:27 am »

So, I finally made a fort big and successful enough to be promoted to a barony! The liaison came to visit, and when he asked who should be the baron, I suggested a useless carpenter who was cooling his heels in the statue garden. So far so good.

As is tradition, the mayor is too busy hauling things to finish up the meeting for another two or three months, during which time Urist McSoonToBeBaron is struck by a strange mood. He grabs a workshop and sits around, waiting for materials.

The liaison finally finishes the meeting, and leaves the map. I get an announcement that my fort has been made an official land of the realm. The carpenter is still in his mood. He is not a noble. A while later, the carpenter finishes his (rubbish, wooden) artifact hatch. He is still not a noble. There is no "baron" position in the nobles screen, either, so I cannot promote anyone else.

Is there anything I can do?

I haven't heard of that bug yet, but you are lucky I tell you. The baron is more a nuisance than being useful, so I always deny the liason's proposal.

Seems like good material for the bug tracker to me. I don't know if there's any way to repair this in your current game. You might want to read up on Dwarf Therapist and DFHack in the modding forum, they might be able to fix something.

I'd say wait until the next time the liaison comes to visit (preferably keeping your "baron" alive until then) and see if anything changes. It's very possible that you encountered a bug, possibly an extension of this one (moods count as "insanity" in some aspects, so it might be preventing the title from being given correctly).

Oh they aren't that bad. I remember the old days when not only would barons would demand and mandate things, but they also would not do any work at all (permanently have the "noble" job) and if you killed one a new one would just show up.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
