Let's Play: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:31:56 pm »

I got FE9 when it first came out but never ended up playing very far due to a combination of ragequitting and losing my memory cards. To get a break from the FE7 Hector Hard Mode, I've decided to go into the realm of Let's Plays and actually play this game. Also, suffer for the amusement of the general populace.

Fire Emblem lacks playable characters, but I'll allow people to make suggestions and decisions for pre-battle and before the battle. If there are side quests/gaiden chapters or major decisions between chapters, let me know before the chapter!

I shall begin with pictures shortly.

Play with only the lowest-tiered characters!

Also PoR has no gaiden missions. At least I think so. Those stopped being a thing between 7 and 11 (well there's 5x in 8, but that one wasn't optional).

I never finished this game either.  It lacked a certain flare that the others had.  I blame it on the graphics and pacing.  The low-key GBA graphics were great for concise, quick action.  The full 3D turns out slow and cumbersome, I always get tired playing it and wanting to take a nap.  That's why I never finished.  Asleep on the couch.

Yeah, I'll totally be turning battle animations off. They were cool for a while, and then I started playing FE8. If there was one good thing about Tower/Ruins, it's that they taught me how battle animations take a long time.

Actually, there are three GBA games. FE6 (aka Sword of Seals) was only released in Japan. FE7 (The Blazing Sword in Japan, or just Fire Emblem here) was the international debut, and FE8 (The Sacred Stones) was the last GBA Fire Emblem game.

I swear I'll actually get started, but the download took longer than I expected. Don't expect too much tonight, I've only got a couple hours before a D&D session.

Prologue: Mercenaries
Ike and his dad (Greil) are sparring, Ike goes down, blahblahblah roleplaying crap blah blah. Some other folks (Mist, Ike's sister, and Boyd, some other dude) show up, and then the TUTORIAL begins. Well, not really a tutorial. Since I disabled help and that crap. But anyways, Ike fights Boyd (kicking his ass) and Greil (who goes easy or something) and levels up. The level was pretty much par for the course as prologue levels go.

CHAPTER THE FIRST: THE BATTLE BEGINS
Time for an actual mission! You get a surprising number of allies surprisingly early. Boyd, a fighter, who you beat the snot out of last mission. Titania, a Paladin who seems to specialize in axes. Oscar (Who henceforth shall  be named "Oscar the Groucho Marx") a lance-only horseback rider.

Map involves my folks (they show up at the bottom right), several bandits, and four villages/houses. Except the first one is torched really early on. And one of them is closed. The other two give a Steel Sword (Woohoo?) and a Seraph Robe (Woohoo!).

IMPRESSIONS THUS FAR: Slightly different from standard Fire Emblem fare, as your main lord is not actually royalty. I have no idea as to whether or not that will change. There are a number of changes, most of them good. Including mounted units being able to move after attacking, and inventory being split between items and weapons.

CLASSES: The mercenary class has been removed, which probably has something to do with the main character and company being mercenaries, and that would get confusing. The Cavalier class seems to have been split into a number of subclasses (specifically, four), each of which uses one kind of weapon. Paladin, likewise, is a mounted combat class that now just uses two weapons. I don't really care either way about these changes, though I did like the Mercenary/Hero units.

I shall sally forth! On to CHAPTER THE SECOND: RESCUE

Yeah, the game has only one Merc/Hero char and he's not recruitable.

Also I think the word you were looking for was nobility. There are few FE protagonists who are actual royalty. The only ones I can think of are Marth, Celice (well, post-game Emperor. Close enough), his cousin Leaf, and Eirika and Ephraim.

Who needs royal blood? Ike is the best MC in the entire series.

Are you playing in fixed mode or random mode?

Excuse the double post, but I have an update. Unfortunately, the story up to this point is fairly bland, and so I'm trying to get through it.

CHAPTER THE SECOND: RESCUE
So, after beating the schnapps out of the bandits in CHAPTER THE SECOND, Ike's sister and Boyd/Oscar's brother get kidnapped. Alas. Titania, the paladin and deputy commander, tells everyone to stay put. I'm perfectly fine with this situation and really don't give a shit, but for the sake of plot Ike heads after them, and the others follow for whatever reasons.

I forgot to take a screenie, but upon reaching the location, suddenly bandits. Naturally. So the four (Ike, Oscar, Boyd, and the new guy, a staff-user named Rhys) start to fight, plus Titania shows up again. Everyone (except Titania and Rhys) levels up, and the chapter is over. At the end, another bandit shows up. Rather than being an idiot like his friends, he does the pragmatic thing and makes everyone drop their weapons or else he'll kill the kids. Arrow Ex Machina from another member of the mercenary group, a sniper goes by the name of Shinon. Following him is Gatrie, a kuhniggit. Or knight, if you prefer.

CHAPTER THE THIRD: PIRATES AGROUND
Greil takes the part of the group I actually have been using on some secret mission and sends Ike with Titania, King Asshole Shinon, and Gatrie to relieve a village under attack by pirates. Well, not so much under attack as conquered by. They do so, Titania picks up an Elixer, and Ike talks to some pegasus knight who then flies off. Three chapters in and still no pegasus knight allies? Wow, that's gotta be a record. Anyways, little of interest happens in the chapter proper.

Afterwards, however, Soren, another of the mercenaries, returns to the fort from the capital of the country. Crimea (country the good guys live in) has been attacked by Daein, another country. To be frank, I'm sort of surprised it didn't happen before the game started. Anyways, Ike is sent to scout the situation with Titania (also as an advisor), Shinon (NOT HAPPY with it), Soren, Rhys, and Gatrie (Why would you send heavy armor on a scouting mission? WHYYYYYY?)

Hopefully things will be more interesting past CHAPTER THE FOURTH: ROADSIDE BATTLE. Or I figure out how to be funnier.
