Yeah, I've been playing with them becoming big in 6 years as well.
But even vanilla children are good for something. They tend to have a couple of levels in farming by the time of adulthood. And with special setups you can teach them masonry or fighting.
They make excellent test subjects for determining syndromes of given FB as well.
Oh, and they pop out even after pop_cap until their own child_cap is reached btw.

I modded the game to make them grow up at ten (less seems exploity to me) and use DF therapist to allow them simple tasks
(feed injuried, haul items,clean)

It would be interesting, though nonsensical if children could do jobs at the age of six. Not because their incapable of doing more crafty work, but more because I get the entertaining image of a child with a bonesaw performing an emergancy amputation.
